It is hard to imagine that in these teeny tiny seeds are the beginnings of a cut flower patch.

Containers

When it comes to selecting the right container for your compost and seeds there are a few factors to consider. Some seeds such as zinnias do not like root disturbance, so should be sown into modules or their own individual pots.

Whether you sow in traditional wooden seed trays, terracotta pots, typical plastic containers or recycle your own yogurt pots is up to you. I like to use small trays that come with a propagator lid or half-sized seed trays. Both fit easily on my windowsills, which means I can sow many different varieties in a small space.

Drainage holes are essential in any container for seed growing, otherwise your seeds will sit in waterlogged compost and rot. There is also no point in using deep containers unless you are sowing large seeds (see box, right). Smaller seeds will not have long root systems initially so all that compost will be wasted.
